Years Passing By

Overclock would like to wish you all a HAPPY NEW YEAR! May we all move ahead and aim at the future and not get stuck in the past, as suggested in the words in this old tune from the Finish synthpop band Neuroactive featured at their 1999 album Fiber-Optic Rhythm:

Moments Passing By
Neuroactive

Oh you lonesome dreamer
Wandering down the memory lane,
Yearning in vain
So convinced that yesterday's always sweeter
You're lost in the past
So let me get you through
The deceiving layers of time
Let me wake you from your illusions to see
That there's nothing to fear
Release yourself

Precious moments passing by
Thirty frames a second
Funny how we get stuck in the past
Memories sweet and gilded
Preventing us from seeing
The present day

Oh sweet confuser
Wish you could leave the burden behind
It's tearing you apart
And thoughts are running in vicious circles
You're lost in the past
So let me help you out
Distraction is clouding your way
Let me wake you from your illusions to see
That there's nothing to fear
Release yourself

Precious moments flying by
While we're recollecting
Wondering why we get stuck in the past
Always contemplating
Instead of daring to face the day

Let me help you out
Let me show you the way
Let me help you out
To dare to face the day
Release yourself

Precious moments passing by
Thirty fbames a second
Funny how we get stuck in the past
Always contemplating

Precious moments flying by
While we're recollecting
Wondering why we get stuck in the past
Instead of daring to face the day

Precious moments passing by

Live Review - Hocico (SP - Brasil - 13/11/11)

R.Nacht - O Hocico é conhecido e reconhecido no mundo todo.

R. Nacht - Se depender do público brasileiro, o Hocico virá sempre.

R.Nacht - Uma última pergunta: Os fãs brasileiros poderão aguardar um novo show no Brasil?

Hurra Torpedo - Poker face

Not sure if you should cook dinner, do your laudry or play a cover of Lady Gaga? Oslo based Hurra Torpedo has no doubts: take your laundry machine and your stove and play Poker Face!
They have already performed Bonnie Tyler's Total Eclipse of the Heart, Britney Spears' Toxic and Tatu's All the Things She Said... and have outshined the originals in each and everyone. Now it's time to give a new life to the pop queen dancefloor hit.

============================================================

Depois de versões de Total Eclipse of the Heart (Bonnie Tyler), Toxic (Britney Spears) and All the Things She Said (Tatu) - sempre superando as originais - é hora de reconstruir o sucesso da atual rainha pop. Confiram: Hurra Torpedo - Poker Face.

music for a small planet: Electrovot - Turning Point

Electrovot has built its reputation over live gigs and compilation appearances and kept faithful to it in their just released debut album Turning Point. The Tijuana (Mexico)/San Diego(US) based band delivers catchy melodies, throbbing basslines and dancefloor driven beats. The synth programming is impressive, but we couldn't expect less from an album produced by Krischan Wesenberg (ROTERSAND) and Tom Lesczenski ([:SiTD:]). The clean vocals of Roberto Sandoval and the exciting electronics in Turning Point will please the ears of those into the melodic EBM style of bands like Solitary Experiments, Rotersand and early Apoptygma Berzerk. It's more than futurepop. It's music for a small planet.

People Are Still Having Sex.

There's a lot of buzz on the interwebz about today being Sex Day. I'm not sure this is a worldwide holiday, but it's still a good opportunity to recall a 20 year old club classic. Chigago based studio project La Tour advocates the most ancient human activity in this 1991 song.

Have a nice day. And Have a lot of sex.

La Tour - People Are Still Having Sex.

Watch and Learn (part 1): Haujobb - Dead Market.

It takes more than a bunch a software synths and fancy voice effects to make a true electro-industrial anthem.
But Daniel Myer and Dejan Samardzic seem to be quite aware of that for what we can hear in Hajobb's new EP Dead Market. While most of the releases out there sounds like redundant and disposable collections of distorted vocals, preset beats and factory default synth patches, Dead Market is a polished gem to our grinded years. Intricated and catchy melodies, hard dance beats and several layers of delicious synth goodness are there to make the title track a newborn industrial classic.

The EP is available as an 8 track digital album at bandcamp including the official video (Director: Boris May - Director of photography: Dominik Kuhn).

Watch and learn kids.

Years ahead of its time: Harry - Genebra (live @ Brazilian TV)

If there's something that can cost you really high is being far ahead of your time. Being a pioneering artist must be the hardest path to track, but it's hard to avoid it when real talent is involved. Brazilian industrial/synthpop/electro-rock band Harry is a canonical case of pioneering leading to oblivion. Their fusion of beats, experimentalism and guitars may sound common place to fans of nowadays hyped bands, but back in the '80s they were unique in the genre and despite becoming a cult among alternative listeners they never really succeeded in the mainstream. Sadly, they were too good for radio.

In this video , Harry announces their second full lenght release Vessel's Town (1990) and performs Genebra, from their 1988 album Fairy Tales at the tv show Boca Livre hosted by Kid Vinyl. Their full discography has been rereleased in a fancy luxurious box entitled Taxidermy by Fiber Records in 2005.

===============================================

Happy Birthday Douglas McCarthy!

Douglas McCarthy, lead singer of Nitzer Ebb, has just turned 45 but his voice and stage performance are just as  powerful as in the early days of NE.

Along with Bon Harris in Nitzer Ebb, McCarthy recorded countless industrial anthemns which soon became club classics worldwide, sometimes crossing the boundaries of the underground and hitting the mainstream. McCarthy have also collaborated with Recoil's (former Depeche Mode member Alan Wider) and the German industrial masters Die Krupps.

During the 2000's McCarthy paired with the DJ Terence Fixmer in the succesful project Fixmer/McCarthy. Having split in 1995 after the release of the album Big Hit, Nitzer Ebb reunited in 2006 and have perfomed several concerts since then. In each of the live appearances, the audience witnesses all the wilderness and rage that have become the trademark of Nitzer Ebb's concerts since the early 80's.

SIMBOLO - Brazilian Industrial Icon Back and Working.

Back in 1992, former label Cri Du Chat Disques released Le Sacré du Printemps, the debut album of the one man band SIMBOLO and the first digital record in the arising Brazilian electronic scene. In its 12 tracks the album presented harsh vocals and dense instrumentals, somehow reminding us the Slovenian band Laibach.

The album got very positive reviews and gained attention worldwide and SIMBOLO appeared as best new electronic artist in the magazines Side-Line and Crewzine paving the way to several more Brazilian electronic acts such as Aghast View, Morgue and Individual Industry.

Unfortunately, after two decades, the Brazilian industrial scene is in a deep coma with a few occasional spasms when concerts and festivals can be spotted.

Not a better time hear to the pioneer SIMBOLO announcing its come back. The band is on studio remastering old tracks and recording new material to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Le Sacré du Printemps. Let's hope it's a new dawn for the fading Brazilian industrial music and more artists may return to activity as well as new acts may appear.

In the mean time, we look forward to hear the new masterpieces of the pioneer SIMBOLO.

=============================================================================

#EBMday part I. - Euphorbia

Rivetheads of the world unite! It's february 24th or 24/2, in European and Brazilian date formats. Which reminds us of Front 242, and led the Electronic Body Music fans to declare it the international EBM day!

Today, in a series of posts we'll present you the bands that started it all, the ones that kept the machines running, those who are leading the scene today and those with a brilliant 'dark' future ahead.

Starting with my homeland, Brazil.
Brazil used to have a strong scene in the '90s when influential bands like Aghast View, Simbolo and Morgue gained a lot of attention on international music magazines and alternative dancefloors around the world.
But we can still find talented acts like the duo Euphorbia, from the southern Porto Alegre.

In this video, shot at Penumbra Cyberparty, ManMachine (electronics) and Messiah (voice) perform Pater Noster, a song from their EP Achromatopsia released on web label Phantasma 13.

New Combichrist video: Throat Full Of Glass

Combichrist has just released their new music video Throat Full of Glass, directed by talented photographer Chad Michael Ward.

Ward is well known for his creative nude and fetish photography and Combichrist has been spicing its industrial techno anthemns with blood and sex for quite a long. What else could we expect of a video joining them together?

But you'll have to wait to see the uncensored EXPLICIT version, announced to be released soon. The "clear version" made available now shows no nudity but keeps the violence, hotness and fun.

Throat Full of Glass is featured in the album Making Monsters released by Out of Line (Germany) and Metropolis (US) in 2010.

She Wants Revenge - Take the World

"All those moments. Will be lost in time..."

The new video from the US indie/post-punk band She Wants Revenge starts quoting the replicant Roy Batty from the proto-cyberpunk cult movie Blade Runner. And then gets better and better.

Apparently shot with a state of the art DSLR camera (maybe Canon 5D Mark-II) and directed by Adam Bravin (who also is a member of She Wants Revenge) the video makes a brilliant use of shallow depths of field - made possible by the affordable prime lenses for DSLR cameras - to portray the intimacy of beautiful and seductive models. Bravin shows that his talent confortably transpasses the border of music into the realm of photography. And we welcome that!

N-Sphere - Art Magazine

N-Sphere - February issue.

N-Sphere announces itself as "a monthly magazine featuring visual arts in various forms, from the old to the new, from the camera to the needle point. gradually expanding to form its own galaxy, the n-sphere includes an interconnected section with the music world." But it certainly goes beyond that. In the crossover between visual arts and music they also collide (no pun intended) with films and literature as in the article about David Cronemberg's 1996 film adaptation of J. G. Ballard's novel Crash (ok, now you see the pun) featured on january issue. The epigraph "See the breaking glass/ in the underpass" quotes the lyrics from the song Warm Leatherette, inspired by Ballard's novel and originally recorded by The Normal and later covered by dozens of artists including Grace Jones, Block 57, Duran Duran, Chicks on Speed, Pankow and is being covered right now by Aire'n Terre for their upcoming album Nowpunk!

The magazine features artwork from both unknown and stabilished artists from all over the word and you'll certainly recognize names as Kaos Beauty Klinik (aka Richard Kadrey - novelist author of The Sandman Slim and one of the quintessential '80s cyberpunk novels: Metrophage), also featured in the january issue.

Besides the magazine, the N-Sphere team also creates and provide art, design and video to audio artists. Of course you can expect high standard concepts in everything they create as in the video Melancholie for the electro-industrial german band KiEw.

The art/design team behind N-Sphere can be also found standing their ground in mostly every existing social media and online art community. Check the list at http://www.sfere.ro/outside/ and be sure you keep an eye on them!

==================================

Sweet and Powerful - The voice of Shannon Funchess

Whenever you think about female voices on synthpop the name Alison Moyet from the British synth duo Yazoo promptly comes to your mind. Fair enough. Moyet and Vince Clarke (Erasure and early Depeche Mode) still have their catchy hits from 1982 Don't Go and Situation pumping dancefloors around the world and are constantly featured on 80's synthpop compilations.

Three decades later an equally impressive voice - sweet and powerful at the same time - reaches our ears: Light Asylum's Shannon Funchess has what it gets to get as stuck in our minds as Alison Moyet previously did. Supporting Shannon's voice the synth programming of Bruno Coviello keeps the post-punk mood from the '80s while injecting the necessary fresh air to make it sound contemporary in the 2010s. Keep a sharp ear and don't lose track of this fine act!

Overclock Interview: Javelynn (Sweden)

An interview with Yaz – front woman of Javelynn
by Maria 'Fuchsia' Gibson

With a cup of Chai, I sit down in a comfy chair, in front of… the computer! I am doing an interview over MSN - oh the wonders of technology!

I am going to interview Yasmine “Yaz” Uhlin, a woman I admire and also a friend. You all might know her from the very successful synth pop band Ashbury Heights. She has recently started a new band though, they’re called Javelynn – and I am very curious about this new project!

The Facebook page tells us that the band consists of Yaz (Lyrics, Programming & Lead Vocals), Johan (Guitars & Backing Vocals) and Elle (Programming and Live Keyboards). The band was formed in 2008 and if you listen to the songs on MySpace they have a very special dark electro pop sound.

The interview starts with a little MSN trouble, but soon takes off. And it soon becomes very apparent how excited Yaz is about Javelynn.

Yasmine 'Yaz' Uhlin (photo: Joakim Karlsson)

Maria: So, who are Javelynn?
Yaz: I started Javelynn when I left Ashbury Heights in late 2008. I asked Johan Andersson to be my guitarist. After 6 months as a duo, we offered Elle the part of keyboardist and co-programmer, ending up as a trio.

Maria: What was the spark that ignited the birth of Javelynn? How did it all start?
Yaz: I loved Ashbury Heights and I never thought it would come to an end, but when I decided to leave I knew I wouldn't be able to stop writing music. I started writing some songs of my own and I took some old drafts from Ashbury Heights with me. Turns out I wasn't that bad on my own so I thought Nah, what the hell. Let's kick some. And I've always thought this scene; the electronica/industrial/rockpop scene needs more front women in general.

Maria: It's impossible not to compare you to Ashbury Heights - how much of the Ashbury sound and ideas do you think you have brought to Javelynn?
Yaz: All of them? Ashbury Heights was my band, my life. I learned everything there is to know about music through Ashbury Heights. Both I and Anders grew as musicians over time, evolved and took greater risks. We write similar lyrics and we have the same basic ideas when it comes to melodies and arrangement, but when you compare Javelynn and Ashbury Heights, you'll hear two different sounds. Javelynn is darker, rougher and perhaps more provocative while Ashbury Heights will always have that flirty 80's pop thing going on. I don't know how else to explain it.

Maria: Ok, so how exactly would you describe the Javelynn sound for those who have not yet heard you?
Yaz: Convert the feeling of an adrenaline kick into sound and there you have it. Javelynn sounds like a mystery. We've developed our own sound, combining synthesizers with full blown hardcore/metal guitars and we twist it and turn it into pop. Our first album is produced like a list pop album but we've kept the dominant electro feel. Javelynn sounds like everything you've heard but in a whole new way. We've taken bits and pieces from everywhere, but we've mixed it like no one else.

Maria: That truly sounds awesome, I'm very curious about this your first album - can you tell us something about it?
Yaz: Chimaera at Heart is our firstborn, yes. With it comes a chaotic mixture of everything I've ever wanted to write and produce, hence the title. I'll never know what to write next, or how it's supposed to sound. This album will not only speak for our existence, but our ambivalence as well. Here's some metal/pop. And don't forget about the r'n'b/EBM We've shoved 11 tracks in there. 11 different ways to express oneself. And we hope you'll like it, of course!

Maria: Is there a release date? I eagerly ask.
Yaz: We've been promised a release in early 2011. The album is being produced as we speak. I'm actually answering your questions from the studio. Yes, I'm a workaholic.

Maria: Awesome! Do you have other plans for the future of Javelynn?
Yaz: I've got my heart set on tons of touring and live performances in general. I won't rest until I've taken this band across countless borders across the world. I've never performed in the States so that's a goal and our first music video will be recorded in just a month or two! We're all very set on taking this band to higher ground. I can't see how a band would work without goals and ambitions. I'm lucky to have such awesome band members as Elle and Johan. Without them, this would be so much harder.

Maria: So, do you have anything booked - will we be seeing Javelynn live somewhere soon? I quickly ask with a hopeful flirty smiley.
Yaz: Sadly, no. We've been offered many gigs but we can't do anything with our material until it's been officially released. But hang in there. The summer festivals are coming up, so who knows. She says with a flirty smiley.

Maria: But that's a good thing! We are eagerly awaiting dates for the album, the video and gigs! Is there something you would like to add? A shout-out perhaps?
Yaz: Oh dear, I'm bad at this. Buy the album, try not to sprain you neck while listening to it and we'll see you soon! And thanks for all your support!

Confira abaixo.

Nobody expects the Rockabilly: And One - Military Fashion Show

Steve Naghavi and his crew did it again! When a band reaches the mark of two decades in activity it's hard to keep sounding fresh without annoying old fans or to keep the essence in their sound and still attract new audiences. But And One seems to know really well how to do it. And that's what they've done (again) in their new single Zerstörer, released by Out of Line/Universal. Zerstörer has everything you could expect in a maxi-single from And One, but you surely didn't expect a rockabilly version (labeled Original Version) of the massive dancefloor hit -which can be fairly called a classic- Military Fashion Show.

The funny unexpected version got also an official video posted at the And One official youtube channel Check it below.

Post War Playground

Gas Masks are a recurring element in the cyberpunk fetish imagery. The plastic rain coat is also a mandatory fashion item under the acid rain. You'll find plenty of gas masks, latex, leather, boots and also beautiful models in some more traditional sexy photography in my portfolios in the links below.

Right now I'm focused in producing MiNerve - a (photo)graphic cyberpunk/biopunk novel to be featured online and on the pages of the printed issues of your cherrished Overclock Zine. Stay tuned!

Nitzer Ebb: Fotos e Vídeos.

Nitzer Ebb
Nitzer Ebb live in São Paulo. photo: Wandeclayt (bunkermedia/fiberonline)

Confira as imagens.

E se você quer ver toda essa euforia em movimento, confira o vídeo de Hearts and Minds, um dos (muitos) pontos altos do show:

Nitzer Ebb: Showtime

E valeu a espera!

=====================================

Brazilian fans have been waiting for decades for the moment they could finally see the adrenalin rush of Nitzer Ebb live on stage. And you can rest assure it was worth the wait.

Bon Harris, Douglas McCarthy and Jason Payne played their last concert for 2010 at Clash Club in São Paulo, but you could never tell they're coming for a long and restless tour across Latin America. Once they hit the stage all you see is energy and dynamics.

Some neat images and animation videos were projected before the concert and when I asked Jason Payne why they are turned off during the concert he said they don't need the videos once they're on stage. Their performance should be enough. And he's right! You can't take your eyes off the band, specially the hyperactive Douglas McCarthy. Running around, shouting and interacting with the audience.

Except for Fun to be had you probably won't miss any of the hits. The setlist also included the less harsh songs from their last release, the album Industrial Complex.

Maybe the audience was smaller than expected. perhaps still one of the symptoms of the failed Madame Satã Fest event in 2009, when a huge number of tickets have been sold just before the promoteur vanished with the money and cancelled the festival. Nitzer Ebb would headline the festival at the time.

Cyberpunk Magritte: Les Amants

[EN] While shooting the footage to present at the You Must Unconditionally Surrender video performance at INVISIBILIDADES III the iconical paintings titled Les Amants (The Lovers) painted by belgian surrealist artist René Magritte came to my mind. There are two similar paintings sharing the name. Both depicting a couple with their heads wrapped in grey fabric. A post-modern cyberpunk contaminated remake of Les Amants could feature gas masks insteads of grey clothes. That's how the photography below was conceived.

[PT-BR] Enquanto gravava vídeos para exibir na videoperformance You Must Unconditionally Surrender no encontro INVISIBILIDADES III no Itaú Cultural, as icônicas pinturas batizadas de Les Amants (Os Amantes) do pintor surrealista belga René Magritte me veio à mente.
