Lastrax - Love is a Shield

Lastrax is a synth/futurepop duo based in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Patrick Mills (voice) and Tecnoman SF (electronics) are veterans of the South American synth scene and have been part of several major projects in the past (take a look at Samsära - Southamerican Streets and MHz - Amazing Mary Jane videos). With catchy melodies, strong vocals and a great presence at the stage they're the logical choice as opening acts for European synth bands touring Argentina and will hit the stage once again in september when Apoptygma Berzerk performs live at La Trastienda in Buenos Aires.

This video has been shot in 2008 at Tecnoman's home studio. Here they perform a cover version for the Camouflage hit Love is a Shield.

[EN] The band has started as an EBM/industrial music project leaded by Stephen Groth in the late '80s and moved towards a more melodic oriented electronic pop as the years went by and more recently to a mainstream flavoured indie rock. The move has been disaproved by old fans but has granted the band a larger audience and their songs to be featured on popular TV shows. Pioneer One - Uma série de TV sem a TV.

O que a primeira vista parece ser um ataque terrorista espalhando radiação sobre uma pequena cidade canadense é na verdade a reentrada na atmosfera de uma cápsula espacial soviética da era da Guerra Fria. O conteúdo da cápsula tem profundas implicações para a ciência e a política em particular e para a humanidade em geral.

É este o enredo de Pioneer One. Certamente não a primeira produção de baixo orçamento a ser disponibilizada na internet, mas a primeira a adotar um formato de série de TV regular e contar exclusivamente com sua distribuição via redes P2P ou, como dizem seus criadores, a primeira série de TV sem a TV. Pioneer One é distribuída sob uma licença Creative Commons Attribution Noncommercial Sharealike e disponível gratuita e legalmente para dowload como Torrent em alta resolução no formato 720p HD(1,2GB) e com resolução padrão XviD (350MB) .

O piloto da série foi filmado com um orçamento de US$ 6000, levantado atrvés de doações pela plataforma Kickstarter. O montante das doações em 21 de junho chegava a US$ 13000 dosUS$ 20000 esperados para financiar os próximos 3 épisódios da temporada (planejada para durar 7 episódios).

Pioneer One - A TV Series without the TV

What at first appears to be a terrorist attack spreading radiation over a small Canadian town is actually the reentrance of a cold war era Soviet space capsule. The surprising contents of the capsule have implications to science and politics in particular and to humanity in general.

That's the plot of Pioneer One. Certainly not the first low budget production to hit the internet, but the first one with a regular TV series format to entirely rely on distribution over P2P networks, or, as their creators claim, the first TV series without the TV. The series is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution Noncommercial Sharealike license and can be freely and legally downloaded from as a BitTorrent in both 720p HD(1,2GB) or standard resolution XviD (350MB) .

The pilot was shot with a US$ 6000 budget, donated by individual supporters through the micro-funding platform Kickstarter. Donations have now reached US$ 13000 of the US$ 20000 expected to fund the next three episodes of a 7-episode first season.

You may think it is a great initiative and will probably watch Pionner One just for the sake of supporting a bold project and a milestone in the history of TV series. But get ready to be very impressed by a consistent and intriguing plot, convincing actors and a really competent direction. It's not just a good cause, it's a actually a promising TV Series showing us what may be the future of TV and the true potential of P2P/Torrent networks.

La Jetée

[EN] There's a lack of Sci-Fi flicks in most of the Short Film Festivals I use to attend. Before anyone raises the argument that the low budget of most amateur film makers justify the absence of the sci-fi genre in independent film festivals, I'll say that the lack of creativity, vision and interest sound more reasonable to me.

To prove my point, I'd like to present you La Jetée, a French short film from the '60s that inspired Terry Gillian's 12 Monkeys three decades later. La Jetée (1962) was written and directed by Chris Marker, and is made entirely (except for a few sublime seconds) of still images. The plot tells the story of a man obsessed by an image of his childhood who is sent back in time after the ecclosion of World War III to find resources to guarantee the survival of mankind. In the absence of dialogues, the beautiful and rich photography evolves as a narrator tells us the story and guides us to the fate of the time traveler.

La Jetée is a lesson in photography and film making. Inspirational in every aspect. And a heads up to those who still have to find out that there's more to Sci-Fi than multi million dollar space operas.



[PT-BR] Há um vácuo de obras de Ficção Científica nos festivais de curtas que já frequentei. Há aí certamente um componente cultural, já que não temos tradição no gênero no cinema. Mas também há quem argumente que os baixos (ou inexistentes) orçamentos de cneastas e videomakers independentes é a principal causa. Eu apontaria que a falta de criatividade, visão e interesse é um ponto mais crucial que a falta de dinheiro.

Para me justificar, apresento o curta francês La Jetée, de 1962, que inspirou Os 12 Macacos de Terry Gillian três décadas depois. Escrito, fotografado e dirigido por Chris Marker, o filme é construído apenas (exceto por uma breve e sublime sequência) sobre fotografias. A história é a de um homem obcecado por uma imagem de sua infância, pouco antes da eclosão da Terceira Guerra Mundial e da destruição de Paris. Enviado de volta no tempo para localizar recursos para garantir a sobrevivência da humanidade ele encontra também a mulher de sua recorrente imagem do passado. Na ausência de diálogos, a história é contada sobre a sequência de fotografias por um narrador que nos guia ao destino do viajante do tempo.

La Jetée é uma aula de fotografia e cinema. Inspirador em cada imagem. E um aviso aos que acham que ficção científica se resume a space operas com orçamentos milionários.

The Brazilian electro act Aire'n Terre has performs unreleased song at the second gig of their Re:Union Tour 2010 last Saturday at Penumbra Cyber Party in Porto Alegre - Brazil.



Stories Untold is expected to feature an upcoming album to be released later this year on the net label Phantasma13.

The next live appearance of Aire'n Terre is scheduled to next sunday at PÓS, a new alternative party in São Paulo - Brazil.

Para promover sua nova linha de TVs widescreen 21:9, A Philips contratou cinco diretores da Ridley Scott Associates para que cada um criasse um curta para a campanha Parallel Lines. Aos diretores foram dadas apenas três instruções:

1. Duração de até 3 minutos.
2. O curta deve ser cinematográfico.
3. E conter as seguintes seis linhas de diálogo (e apenas elas):

-'O que é?'

-'É um unicórnio'
-'Nunca vi um de perto antes'
-'Lindo'
-'Vá embora. Vá embora.'
- 'Sinto Muito.'

Com total liberdade criativa, cada diretor seguiu um rumo diferente chegando a resultados impressionantes que tinham em comum apenas as três instruções dadas aos diretores.

The Gift, dirigido Carl Erik Rinsch, é a contribuição da ficção científica à campanha e é também um presente aos fãs do gênero. Encontrar a palavra "Unicórnio" em um projeto entregue à Ridley Scott Associates dificilmente é uma conicidência. O unicórnio é uma peça chave inserida no director's cut (1992) e no final cut(2007) do clássico de Ridley Scott Blade Runner(1982).

It's a Unicorn!

To promote its new line of 21:9 widescreen TVs, Philips briefed five directors from Ridley Scott Associates to create each a short film to the campaign Parallel Lines under the following guidelines:

1. maximum of 3 minutes.
2. make it cinematic.
3. feature only the following six lines of dialogue:

-'What is that?'

-'It's a unicorn'
-'Never seen one up close before'
-'Beautiful'
-'Get away, get away'
- 'I'm Sorry.'

Given complete creative control over their pieces, each director headed in different directions and ended up with widely distinct mindblowing films having only the three guidelines in common.
The Gift, directed by Carl Erik Rinsch, is the sci-fi contribution to the Parallel Lines campaign
and its a true gift for sci-fi fans. There's also a competition open to the wide public to chose the sixth film for the Parallel Lines campaign. You just have the shoot your film under the same guidelines given to the RSA directors and submit it. Check the announcement here.




To find the word "Unicorn" in a project handed to Ridley Scott Associates is hardly a coincidence . The unicorn appears as a major twist in the 1992 director's cut and in the 2007 final cut of Ridley Scott's 1982 cult sci-fi movie Blade Runner.

Ever since Front 242 started up in 1981 the number 242 has held a special position in the numerology of Electronic Body Music. Using the date format often used in Europe (dd/mm = 24/2) it's fairly obvious why the International EBM day is celebrated on february 24. Though people over the world probably have celebrated this day before along with their friends, it has never been an official celebration day before. But from now on, every year on february the 24th; it's International EBM day! Its only purpose is that all EBM fans over the world now have a special day when they can get together and listen to, or dance to, or party to, Electronic Body Music.

Aire'n Terre live @ Grito Rock - Santa Maria

Aire'n Terre has just started the Re:Union Tour 2010 (an obvious joke, since Wandeclayt M. is the only member of the band on stage) as part of the Grito Rock Festival. The festival takes place in several Brazilian and a few Latin American cities and Aire'n Terre went on stage at a very familiar venue: Macondo Lugar (Santa Maria).

Despite of being a rock festival, the line up included bands which heavily rely on electronics to build their sound. Aire'n Terre brought to stage their multimedia machinery to perform a short but intense concert which included cyberpunk and fetishist live projections to suport the performance. On the set list two covers: the synth anthem Enjoy the Silence from Depeche Mode and Songs of Metal and Flesh from the brazilian electro pioneers Harry. This song is the contribution of Aire'n Terre and Euphorbia to The Sky is Grey, the brazilian tribute to Harry, released by the netlabel Phantasma 13 and available for free download.

Also relying on electronics and sequenced beats but adding a dense wall of distorted guitars to its sound, the band Stereologica was a fine surprise. The music of Roberto and Mari can't be easily defined but you can surely think of a blend of Jesus and Mary Chain or Sonic Youth with New Order even if none of these are direct influences of the members.

Expect old school synth basslines, deep vocals and a very dark mood on each of the 5 tracks. From time to time you will recall some of the iconic electronic brazilian bands from the Cri Du Chat label in the early '90s - Harry, in particular -, but Helldrigo injects fresh air into the old sound and succeeds to bring it to the 2010s.

Gary Numan meets NIN

Although I have some of his songs on my DJ sets I'm not exactly a fan of Trent Reznor's music and never have the interest to attend NIN's concerts in Brazil. That being said I would certainly go berzerk with this concert performed last july by Nine Inch Nails in London, where the influential synthpop pioneer Gary Numan joined in to perform his all time classics Metal and Cars .

Embora eu inclua uma ou outra faixa do Nine Inch Nails em minhas discotecagens, não chego a ser exatamente um fã do trabalho de Trent Reznor e sequer movi uma palha para ver algum de seus shows no Brasil. Dito isto, tenho que confessar que eu entraria em frenesi nesta apresentação do NIN em Londres em agosto passado, quando o pioneiro do synthpop Gary Numan subiu ao palco para tocar seus hits absolutos Metal e Cars.

Scandinavian Massacre : Leather Strip

Claus Larsen (1982)

Looking at the picture of the Danish teenager Claus Larsen back in 1982, one could hardly tell he would be the sole responsible for a massive massacre in the 1990's. But we're not talking about shootings in schools or restaurants. Larsen's electronic warfare came under the name Leather Strip and dropped hard and danceable music over European alternative dancefloors. Filled with references from the conflicts in the past decade his lyrics are a document of the last years of the cold war. Rich soundscapes and multi layered composition soon became his trademark and Talla 2XLC, the man behind the German label Zoth Ommog - the most influential label in the electronic scene in the 90's - became his strong supporter.

The release of Japanese Bodies 12" (1989) followed by the full lenght The Pleasure of Penetration (1990) is the ground zero for the blasting dark electro explosion which lasts until today. The success of Leather Strip opened the doors to :Wumpscut:, Suicide Commando, Hocico and their countless clones.

The end of Zoth Ommog and the death of Larsen's father drove Leather Strip into a five year hiatus lasting from 2000 to 2005. Facing a severe depression, Larsen points his love for animals and for his husband (yes, he's homossexual and married for more than a decade now) as the only reasons for him to live and to endure this dark period. In 2005, the label Alfa-Matrix - which according to Claus were the only ones who kept sending emails during his reclusion - convinced him to get the machinery running once more. Soon a new record was released and Leather Strip was back on stage.

Nowadays Leather Strip is just as active as in their early years and Larsen says he's just as motivated as when he was 16. See it for yourself in the live video of Strap Me Down, performed at Amphi Festival 2009.

Mas nada de tiros em escolas ou restaurantes! O massacre promovido por Larsen veio na forma de música eletrônica pesada, dançante e com letras repletas de referências a conflitos e guerras da década anterior. Some a isso uma pitada de antiamericanismo, um impressionante riqueza de timbres e camadas em cada produção e o apoio de Talla 2XLC, o nome por trás da Zoth Ommog - a gravadora mais importante na música eletrônica dos anos 90. Sob a alcunha de Leather Strip, Claus Larsen lançou em 1989 o 12" Japanese Bodies, preparando o terreno para a vasta dicografia que iniciaria com o álbum The Pleasure of Penetration em 1990.

A música do Leather Strip e dos projetos paralelos de Claus Larsen abriu caminho pra toda uma vertente e foi embrionária dos beats acelerados e vocais saturados do Dark Electro. Sem o sucesso do Leather Strip, dificilmente teríamos :Wumpscut:, Suicide Commando, Hocico ou seus infinitos clones atuais.

Após o fechamento da Zoth Ommog e a morte de seu pai, por câncer, o Leather Strip viu um hiato que durou de 2000 a 2005, período em que Larsen mergulhou na depressão e aponta seu amor pelos animais e pelo seu marido Kurt (sim, Claus Larsen é homossexual assumido e casado há mais de uma década) como o que o manteve vivo nesse período. Foi a gravadora Alfa-Matrix quem em 2005 trouxe Claus de volta aos estúdios e aos palcos com o lançamento do álbum Suicide Bombers.

Plastique Noir - Those who walk by the Night.

Fortaleza - in the Brazilian Northeast - is well known for its sunny beaches and warm sea. In this land where the Sun shines all the year, many surprises come with the dusk. A small but solid unexpected rock scene arises as the Sun goes down. Even more unexpectedly you'll take notice that one of the better and most active post-punk bands in Brazil lives and plays many gigs here. Plastique Noir has gained strong media attention and has toured almost the entire country playing in the most famous independent rock festivals and spreading their reach beyond the limits of the almost non-existent Brazilian goth scene. They've wisely trailed a path that kept their old fans and rapidly gained admirers from the neighbor punk, psychobilly and indie scenes. They've recently performed at Ponto.CE an independent festival headlined by The Exploited. After a few independent demo releases they've signed to Pisces Records to release their debut album Dead Pop. Airton S.(vox/programming), Marcio Mäzela (guitar) and Danyel (bass/programming) have successfully made a varied collection of catchy melodies, dark moods and intelligent riffs and programming. You'll certainly feel the influence of old school gothic rock but there's even a stronger feel of fresh music in their sound placing them close to bands like Interpol or She Wants Revenge.

Their strong presence in most of the social networks available has proved to be an efficient strategy to spread their word and grow their fan base, as we can see by the current poll promoted by a Brazilian telecom company to chose new bands to be featured in their webradio. Alta tecnologia e baixo orçamento. É a receita do uruguaio Federico Alvarez no curta Ataque de Panico. Assim como Neil Bloomkamp em seu Alive em Joburg (curta que deu origem ao blockbuster District 9), Alvarez tira Nova York e os Estados Unidos do circuito e mostra uma Montevidéu invadida por robôs gigantes no curta escrito e dirigido por ele. Alvarez faz parte do time da Murdoc Films, coletivo uruguaio que produz curtas, videoclipes e comerciais de TV. Com menos de uma semana no ar, Ataque de Pánico já contabiliza mais de 100 140 mil exibições no youtube. Confira o curta:
